Substrate-recognition component of a cullin-5-RING E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase complex (ECS complex, also named CRL5 complex), which mediates the ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of target proteins, such as CDO1 (PubMed:40963025). The ECS(LRRC58) complex acts as a regulator of cysteine catabolism by mediating ubiquitination and degradation of CDO1, the rate-limiting enzyme of the cysteine catabolic process to taurine (PubMed:40963025). L-cysteine abundance regulates ECS(LRRC58)-mediated ubiquitination of CDO1: the complex promotes ubiquitination and degradation of CDO1 in presence of high level of cysteine, but not when cysteine abundance is low (PubMed:40963025). . This is the function of ENSG00000163428 (LRRC58, leucine rich repeat containing 58).
